Charters: E.L. Haynes

El_haynes

The application deadlines for the 2012-2013 school year are approaching.  One of the earliest deadlines is that of E.L. Haynes – you must apply by 5pm on March 2 to be included in the lottery.  Applications can be submitted online.

General Information

Since its opening in 2004, E.L. Haynes has been strengthening its reputation as a great charter option.  Currently, there are 800 students in grades pre-K3 through ninth, but the school plans to continue adding grades until it goes all the way through twelfth.  Parents often remark on the elementary school’s warmth and organization, and the middle school scores demonstrate its strong academic program – last year ninety percent of the eighth grade students scored proficient or advanced in math, and seventy-five percent scored the same in reading.

E.L. Haynes has a full-year calendar, providing educational programs during the official school breaks, so that the students can choose to attend for 47 weeks each year.  It also features a teaching resident program in which aspiring teachers spend a year at the school working alongside the more experienced teachers.  As a STEM school, more emphasis is put on science, technology, engineering and math than in typical schools.

Location

E.L. Haynes is located in two separate buildings in Petworth and is unlikely to move in the near future.

The early childhood program (preschool through second grade) and high school are located at 4501 Kansas Avenue, NW, at a former DCPS elementary school that has been turned over to E.L. Haynes under a long term lease.  It is in the process of being renovated to make use of the expansive indoor and outdoor spaces.

Grades third through eighth are housed at a permanent facility at 3600 Georgia Avenue.  This facility has a gymnasium, cafeteria, art  and music rooms.
